In this page, we are going to summarize the major characteristics of stone, brick, iron, steel, and concrete.
Stone.
Rough and resistent material.
Can be used in natural shapes for construction.
Strong in terms of compression.
Weak in terms of high tensions.
Good but expensive material.
Many ways to be worked with, such as Ashlar Masonry and Rubble.
Brick.
Bricks are made of ceramic components.
There are many types of bricks; such as mud bricks, Rail Kins, Dry pressed bricks and others.
They are mostly used in interior decoration and construction.
Different methods of brick disposal in constructions. (Bricklaying Techiniques)
Iron & Steel.
Iron is an Expensive material in construction.
Strong in compression terms.
Iron can be molded in various shapes.
Steel is oftenly used in tall and large construction such as skycrapers and arch buildings.
Steel loses strengh in high temperatures.
Concrete.
It is a stonelike material, made by the mixture of water, cement and some type of sands.
Very strong in terms of Compression.
Very weak in terms of Tension.
There are many ways to work with concrete in construction issues, such as Concrete Shell constructions; Precast-concrete constructions, Prestressed concrete, and reinforced with steel concrete.
