Here, I`m going to talk about Walls, Posts and Lintels as elements of a building or space, also considering its types and characteristics.
Wall
It is usually a solid structure that defines a space in specific or separates it from another. There are various types of walls, but the most specific ones are building walls, exterior boundary walls, and retaining walls.
Building walls are those used to support roofs or ceilings and to separate the internal spaces of any building in specific. They have mostly and structural function but also can have a decorative one. Exterior Boundary walls are mostly used to define privacy or to limitate and protect certain private property. Thay have, maybe, the same function of a fence but ir is more heavy and thicker. For last, but not least important, Retaining Walls. Used for, as it's name indicates, to retain certain earth movement in specific activities such as farming.
Inca Wall, Macchu Picchu
Post and Lintel.
It is a, architrave used since megalithic times. It is a method of support of the structure in construction. It is usually composed by two posts, (vertical elements), that sostain a lintel, (horizontal element), that is a beam that supports open spaces in the building such as big entrances or openings such as windows.
Ancient Greeks, Egipcians and even mayans used this style of structure to support their entrances and walkways. However, posts and dintels need to have a samll distance between the vertical elements and have a limited weight resistance caused by the tensive and compressive forces acting in them.
